World Elder Abuse Awareness Day June 15, 2011
The 6th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15, 2011. Elder abuse is a violation of human rights. This post includes a Maryland-specific adaptation of an elder abuse awareness fact sheet from the National Center on Elder Abuse http://www.ncea.aoa.gov/. In honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, please join me in raising awareness about elder abuse and promoting the human rights of older adults by distributing this fact sheet widely. You can also show you care by wearing purple.
For a world perspective on elder abuse, including posters that you can download, see the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse http://www.inpea.net/. For additional useful information on human rights and older adults, see "Strengthening Older People’s Rights:Towards a UN Convention" http://www.inpea.net/images/Strengthening_Rights_2010.pdf and "Human Rights of Older Persons: International human rights principles and standards" from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights http://social.un.org/ageing-working-group/documents/OHCHR%20Backgroud%20paper%202011.pdf.
